Google Privacy Policy

As you may remember, roughly a week ago Google issued a major overhaul of its privacy policies — condensing some 60 scattered terms of service into a single document covering a vast majority of its internet empire. Of course, this raised concern, confusion and led to stories circulating the web about the inherent danger of the revised TOS. Truth be told, most of the wild-eyed fear mongering was done by those who either had not read or had not understood what the simplified policies mean (though, we hardly fault them for being suspicious). Google is looking to allay those fears however, and has released the full text of a letter written to congress clarifying the new TOS. The important information here is presented on the Google Public Policy Blog as bullet points and that is what’s not changing. Users will still be able to search without signing in, opt out of targeted ads, export their data and maintain fine-grained control over their private data. Oh and Google will never, we repeat never, sell your information to advertisers. Hit up the source link if you’re still in need of more details.

Sony's 3D Experience channel tops 10 million views, some people like the extra dimension

Since kicking off its free 3D Experience channel, Sony has managed to notch up 10 million viewers in just short of six months. The channel offers up samples of music, movies, sports and documentaries for free, in an effort to tempt viewers into ponying up cash for the full experience. The channel, available on its Bravia 3DTV range and Blu-ray players, has now expanded from its five initial launch countries to 60. It’s currently offering tastes of forthcoming Sony titles like The Amazing Spiderman and content from last year’s World Cup, with a total of around 100 free snippets to peruse on the Japanese iteration of the channel. You hear Sony well up with pride in the PR below. Well, it’s had a pretty tough time recently.

Google Blogger Mosaic Dynamic View

Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy ‘Dynamic Views’. There’s a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails — click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views — and really, why weren’t they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive — which we’re sure it will be — these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You’ll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.

It didn’t take Microsoft long to realize that they had more than they bargained for with Kinect. While originally intended only for use with the Xbox 360, the motion sensing device soon found a home with PC hackers. After first rejecting the notion, Microsoft soon changed their tune and began to embrace the hackerspace. Earlier this month…

Earlier this month, Microsoft applied for a patent related to a technology that would highlight areas of high crime and route people around them. Folks seemed to get upset because areas like this tend to struggling due to a lack of revenue, and this would route people who might otherwise shop there to other safer and likely more lucrative areas. While true, I think it comes down to choice.

“Consumers are putting on the travel agent uniform themselves.”

That’s one of Johan Svanstrom’s key observations after almost seven years as the vice president and managing director for Asia of hotel booking site Hotels.com.

From a small telephone service in the United States 20 years ago, the company has grown into a worldwide online booking site with around 140,000 properties in its books.

Currently operating 85 country sites worldwide, Svanstrom started 2012 with a bang — by announcing a new loyalty program that gives customers one free hotel night for every 10 they book through Hotels.com.

But it’s the next five to 10 years that Svanstrom thinks will really see the travel booking process turned on its head.
