Nearly everyone enjoys the different types of entertainment, and some people enjoy even more being entertainers. They want to become actors, comedians, dancers, singers. We used to go inside theatres after a hard day’s work to relax and see our favorite plays. But only in the last hundred years have we been able to record sound and pictures and to broadcast them through air. These improvements have brought fun and entertainment to every corner of the world and into most of our homes.

Technology has indeed made it possible for us to see entertainment in a new light. For one, technology has made it also possible for us to store our memories. Actors and singers long dead seem to come to life again every time their films or records are played. We can store a seemingly countless number of these records and films in CDs, hard drives and other storing devices like our computer. This makes it possible for us to entertain ourselves almost anywhere- at home, at the office, at the park, the bus; as long as we bring our devices with us. One can actually live without TV these days as long as one has a computer device and internet connection.

The world of entertainment has grown tremendously, and it can teach us as well as entertain us. Today, broadcasting is the most important form of popular entertainment. But now it is challenged by still newer inventions. Video playback and recording equipments make it possible for home viewers to buy or record their favorite shows. Many classic movies are already available for home viewing. This new equipment may encourage many viewers to spend fewer hours watching network offerings of situation comedies and action dramas. And now, we can record, transfer, and produce our own videos using cellular phones.

At the same time, the internet has revolutionized viewing habits in another way. The internet provides information on a lot of sources for movies, music, and other forms of entertainment. With internet connection, people can bring programs directly into their computer by doing downloads and many of these downloads are offered for free. Not only does it provide entertainment but we can even do some transactions like when you want to buy stun guns online.

The internet offer entertainment on almost all particular interests- music, news, and special information such as stock markets, weather, and social networking. These sources are made available to us faster than ever, as fast as the stun gun effects.  We can update on news even before they get broadcasted on TV through the different websites on the internet.

Never in recorded history have Entertainment and arts been so important in the lives of so many people. John Wayne – “The Duke”

The Duke was plagued by health problems which came to a head in 1964. He lost his left lung and two ribs to cancer in September of that year. Although rumors spread that he had developed the disease while filming in Utah, where the U.S. government had been testing nuclear bombs, he denied that this was true. Admittedly, he smoked from three to five packs of cigarettes a day from the early 1930s until the operation in 1964.

His agent and advisors wanted to cover up the hospitalization and illness, due to the fact that the backers and insurers of the motion picture industry were hesitant to have ailing actors performing. It was “bad business” to back someone with a potentially fatal disease. But about 3½ months after his operation, Mr. Wayne held a press conference at his ranch in Encino, California and announced that he had no intentions of going out quietly. Because of his openness and honesty, cancer victims from around the world found new hope and courage in the strength which he showed and offered to them.

Despite his illnesses and their complications, Mr. Wayne continued to do many of his own stunts. In 1969, while filming “The Undefeated”, he fell from his horse and fractured three ribs. After almost two weeks of recuperating and then returning to work, he tore a ligament in one of his shoulders and could not use the arm on that side at all. In order to finish the film on a timely basis, his remaining shots were done at an angle to hide the non-use of that arm. He finished filming and showed remarkable aplomb, in spite of tremendous pain.

Mr. Wayne’s last film, “The Shootist” (1976), portrayed him as an aging gunfighter who is diagnosed with prostate cancer. He was, at the time, again fighting lung cancer and had been diagnosed with stomach cancer as well. His co-star, the legendary Lauren Bacall, had watched her real life husband, Humphrey Bogart, battle lung cancer and its agonies. The interaction between Ms. Bacall and The Duke came through during the filming and made for some very touching and real life interjections in the final product.

Because Mr. Wayne was not able to work every day, the shooting schedule was extended to accommodate him. Due to the fact that there had been questions about whether or not he would be able to finish the film, because of failing health, he made it his personal mission to accomplish just that – and succeeded in his endeavors.

Following completion of the film, Mr. Wayne had surgery in December of 1976, ironically, for an enlarged prostate. His public appearances decreased drastically after that. But being the trouper that he was he continued to appear, as often as his health allowed, until he lost his battle with cancer on June 11, 1979 at the age of 72 years and 16 days. He left behind him an incredible legacy which survives, even today.

He received many honors and tributes during his lifetime, as well as posthumously. Besides the Oscar that he received for “True Grit”, Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona nominated him for the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1979. That was awarded and presented to his family after his demise. And he was honored on the day of his passing by the lighting of the Olympic Torch at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. The torch remained lit until he was interred four days later.

Other notable honors and tributes include:

1970 – received the DeMolay Legion of Honor

1973 – Awarded the Gold Medal from the National Football Foundation in honor of his time as a player at both Glendale High and USC

1974 – Induction into the Hall of Great Western Performers at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

1974 – The Harvard Lampoon invited Mr. Wayne to appear at the Harvard Square Theater to award him the “Brass Balls Award” for his “outstanding machismo and a penchant for punching people”. He accepted and arrived atop an armored personnel carrier which was operated by active military personnel. He mounted the stage of the theater and quickly and adroitly answered the derogatory questions with lightening-quick wit. Despite the ill feelings associated with the college students who voiced anti-war sentiments in regards to Vietnam, he won them over completely

1976 – Presented the People’s Choice Award for “Most Popular Motion Picture Actor”

1980 – Posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter

1986 – Inducted as a Member of the First Class into the DeMolay Hall of Fame

1990 – Pictured on a 25 cent stamp issued by the U.S Postal Service honoring films of 1939. He was featured as “The Ringo Kid” from “Stagecoach”

1997 – Ranked #16 in Empire (UK) Magazine’s “Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time”

2001 – Gallup Poll participants selected John Wayne as their favorite movie star of all time

2003 – He placed in the “Top Ten” of the annual Harris Poll asking Americans to name their favorite movie star of all time. No other deceased actor has achieved this status since the inception of this particular poll in 1993

2004 – Commemorated on a 37 cent stamp in the “Legends of Hollywood” series issued by the U.S. Postal Service

Other notable tributes and honors with no listed dates include: voted 4th Greatest Movie Star of All Time by Premiere Magazine, named 13th Greatest Actor on the list of 50 Greatest Screen Legends by the American Film Institue, voted 5th Greatest Movie Star of All Time by Entertainment Weekly Magazine and Mr. Wayne was a Lifetime Member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Masons, DeMolay and the USC Trojan Knights.

Further, John “Duke” Wayne holds the record for the actor with the most leading parts – 142. He was the lead actor in all but 11 of those films.

He has been imitated, countless times, by comedians and actors in films and on television. He has been referenced in song lyrics over the last four decades, as recently as 2004 in a song by the country music duo “Big and Rich”. He has an airport in Orange County, California named for him and even has a 100 mile stretch of trail in the Iron Mountain State Park in Washington named in his honor.

Even today, one might see a Western film “aficionado” attempt to imitate the rolling walk, the slow drawl and the use of the term “pilgrim” which were employed by this film icon.

And the John Wayne Cancer Institute continues to pursue treatments and cures for several forms of the devastating disease which took this great man out of our physical world. His influence still continues in our lives, almost 30 years after his demise. He will be remembered as long as there are those who carry on his legacy and share his memories and films with future generations.

The Day That TV Turned Me Into a Fan of Boxing and Wrestling

As is true for most boys, I also liked to sit in front of the TV evenings and sometimes on weekends with my dad. He liked baseball, of course, because it’s the birthright of every American male. But my dad also liked boxing. In fact, he was passionate about it. He would sit on the couch (make that the edge of the couch) feinting, ducking and lunging along with the fighters on the screen just as if he were in the ring.

At first, I would laugh when I saw him do that. After watching several fights with him, I stopped laughing and started copying his movements because, over time, I had developed the passion that he had lived with for so many years.

It was great. I had become a fan of boxing… loved the history and the great names like Marciano (49-0 career with 42 KOs) and then Cassius Clay (soon to be Muhammad Ali). I developed a love/hate “relationship from afar” with him in the early years… then an appreciation of his greatness. He is, arguably, the greatest heavyweight fighter of all time, certainly the fastest.

Where did wrestling come in? Believe it or not, my mother enjoyed that unusual form of “sports entertainment.” She was convinced that it was real and my dad could never get her to change her mind. No matter. She would watch the “matches” unfold on the TV screen and voice her anger as “the bad guy” wreaked havoc on “the good guy.”

The more I watched, the more I actually began to enjoy what was taking place. These “behemoths of the ring” were like oversized cartoon characters and the shows they put on were entertaining… as long as you viewed them as entertainment.

And then, Vince McMahon, Hulk Hogan and the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) took professional wrestling national, then global… and to a position of prominence and respectability it had never before attained.

Sports fans can watch professional boxing and wrestling on TV most nights of the week these days… if they subscribe to services from the right programming providers.

And, while television turned me into a fan of boxing and wrestling when station choices were relatively limited, it will be interesting to see how many young fans these sports can develop now when station choices are almost limitless… when boxing and wrestling are available most evenings of the week – in prime time.

Considerations About Becoming Part of the Entertainment Business

Consider watching more movies which are not necessarily “award-winning” or part of the “main stream”, and you may even ironically find that certain of these are more entertaining than the ones mentioned above. For one, they may have far more humor in them, and possibly even higher quality humor in them. What makes them out of the main stream though could be how controversial they are.

Movies of these sorts, or possibly even BOOKS of these sorts have ways of keeping the viewer’s attention in a way that others might even find to be a bit intimidating. They could be considered “freaky”, or “abnormal”. But surely they can be entertaining, and include real-life messages in them. There could even be ones that are not allowed to be sold in a typical music store or book store. You might find them used on the Internet or on websites that are far out from what might be considered main stream.

Ironically, one who might have partaken in making this sort of material might have eventually gone mainstream from there and made a significant amount of money from it. Anyone thinking about getting into the entertainment business ought to explore how well they are with making their OWN material BEFORE “selling out”. Even if it’s considered to be controversial. The truth is that a significant amount of people do not live by the very “morals” they claim to have, so it is not really as if you would be doing much new in that sense.

If you remember a soap opera you used to watch, chances are that the writer embraced his own strengths to see how good he could make it rather than aim for the money first and work from there. Online Gaming is Changing the Entertainment Industry as We Know it

December was a landmark in video gaming’s conquest of American culture, with Major League Gaming signing $1.75 million in exclusive contracts with the top 7 pro gamers on 18 December. MLG currently airs a weekly TV program on USA Network, and the revenue power of online gaming is beginning to flex its muscles.

3 days later (21 December), Johnny Damon, star center fielder of the NY Yankees, announced his alliance with the Global Gaming League, to form the Professional Ballplayers Gaming League. The PBGL will enable Joe Videogamer to play with and against some of his favorite pro baseball players in the league’s chosen field of online combat, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Xbox Live.

Then there’s the steady convergence of Hollywood and video gaming toward a common destination. Japanese game publisher Capcom has already enjoyed a satisfying relationship with Tinsel Town when it licensed its Resident Evil property to Impact Pictures and Sony Pictures for three separate productions (a third is currently in the works). Now they are stepping into a partnership with Hyde Park Entertainment to produce a Street Fighter movie.

Online gaming is proving itself to be quite capable of standing alone, however. As of June of last year, Microsoft divulged that more than 500 million full games of Halo had been played on Xbox Live. We are not saying 500 million players, but half a billion full matches, that may have as many as 16 players at one time. This would appear to be more of a trend, than a passing fad.

We do not claim to be the sharpest pencil in the box, but even we can see the possibilities. How long will it be, before other sports organizations see the potential in following Johnny Damon’s lead? What if game developers started creating games specifically for this type of application? EA Sports, are you listening? Imagine the enthusiasm of football fans if they could play Madden 2007 with and against their favorite football stars online, during the off-season? Off-season would no longer be a killswitch for the leagues. Public relations and interest could continue year around. What about pro wrestling? Hockey? What would a NASCAR fan do to race against his favorite driver online? The possibilities are endless.

Video gaming, and in particular, online gaming, is going to change the Entertainment Industry as we know it.
