Satellite TV and Books, Education and Entertainment

If you’ve kept your ears open, you will have heard a lot of discussion about the relative merits of reading books versus watching TV. Is television rotting our minds, destroying our children’s education, obliterating our culture? It always sounds like people really think that TV is bad for you, but that no one actually still reads books. There is a common notion that books are boring but make you smart, while TV is fun and makes you dumb.

It all sounds far too polarized, if you ask me, and far too dire. Sure terrible television shows do exist, especially with the endless options of satellite TV, but there are lots of great programs too – again, thanks to that huge variety of options. Is it possible to find a compromise between these two different forms of media? Can we get entertainment from books and education from television?

My daughter is in high school, so the confrontation between books and TV is especially stark for her. In her view, books are part of schoolwork, while TV is leisure time activity. I have always tried to help break the barrier down by introducing her to good, fun books, and, on the flip side, by making her sit through things like the Ken Burns Civil War documentary with me (yes, I’m perverse – I’m a parent).

After eleven hours I don’t think she doubted my claim that movies can be educational – though for her that probably translated to “boring.” Even on the HD TV it had failed to inspire her. Go figure.

Recently, she and I made a new discovery together that finally demonstrated the positive relationship between books, movies, leisure, and learning. One day she brought home a new book she had to read for a social anthropology class, called “Learning Capitalist Culture: Deep in the Heart of Tejas.” I had to sympathize with her eye-rolling, as the title was not especially inspiring. But flipping through it, I got much more interested. It was the true story of a small town in rural Texas where high school football ruled all. The team was always among the best in the state, and the young athletes were under great pressure to perform, while still having to deal with all of the regular high school difficulties, as well as severe tensions between races and social classes.

It sounded very familiar. I didn’t mention my discovery to her, and instead waited a few weeks until she had finished reading the book before I went out and rented Friday Night Lights on high definition DVD. Now she may roll her eyes when I put on my NFL Sunday Ticket every weekend, but she also loves a good sports movie. We weren’t 10 minutes into the movie before she caught on – “Hey, this is just like that book!”

She sat enthralled for the whole movie, and when it was over she went and got out pen and paper. “What are you doing?” I asked. Distracted, she answered, “I’m writing my final paper, duh!” Just like that, with no complaining, procrastinating, or agonizing, she wrote her final paper for the class. She got an A. What’s more, she later bought the book Friday Night Lights and read it, just for fun. I guess TVs can teach and books can entertain after all.

DVDs As a Popular Form of Entertainment

A great gift that is often overlooked in many cases is the gift of giving a DVD. DVDs can be great gifts for a variety of reasons. Purchasing a classic DVD for a friend can be a great gift because you can find a different DVD for everyone on your gift list. Whether it is a Horror DVD for an friend, Action DVD for a coworker, or a DVD for the family and kids, there is a genre of movie to suit everyone’s needs. Furthermore, throughout the new year and with new releases, special edition DVDs can be a great touch to a gift for any occasion.

Whether purchasing DVDs online or in a store, popular categories include Action, Drama, Comedy, Horror, Family and Kids, and Documentaries. Between the variety of categories there is sure to be a flick for everyone on your gift list.

Next time you are considering a trip to the movie theater, consider the purchase of a DVD. For the same price as going to the movie theater (and often times cheaper!) you can go to the video store and purchase a DVD. Instead of a one-time use, you can own the DVD and watch it dozens of times and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.

One of the major benefits of giving the gift of DVDs is that you can watch it over and over again without degrading quality. Unlike the past of VHS tapes, DVDs will not degrade in quality and require no work to maintain.

DVDs come loaded with extra bonus features including director’s cuts, deleted scenes, and “Making of” segments. Getting the most out of your movie watching experience includes watching these bonus segments and finding out more information about the movie. Often times, watching the same movie on DVD in comparison to watching it in theaters or on TV is a completely different movie watching experience.

Overall, giving the gift of DVDs is ideal for anyone on your gift list. Whether they enjoy action movies or horror movies, there is a DVD to suit anyone. The combination of the bonus material on DVDs and being able to watch it in the comfort of your own home makes DVDs the ultimate gift.

About Me: I’m 35 years old and have been in the Army for close to 14 years. I have a wife and 4 kids. I love a good movie in my spare time with my large family. So I invite you to start your own DVD Movie collection.

When entertaining at home there are a few things that go into planning. There is no need to host a grand shindig anytime you want to have friends or family over; but people will notice when you make certain special preparations on their behalf. Here are some tips to help your home entertaining go as smoothly as possible, without causing you a lot of work and stress.

For most people, the first thoughts about entertaining go towards the kitchen. There is really no problem with planning your menu first, as long as you give yourself some time later to think about how your home will look when guests arrive. But we’ll talk about that later. For now, let’s go into the kitchen.

To make your dinner planning easy, browse through easy recipes that you can make in your crock pot. If you find that you may need more than one, borrow from a friend or family member. There are plenty of quick and easy recipes for chicken that will wow your guests into thinking you slaved over this luscious meal. Using a crock pot, you could load in boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut potatoes and carrots. On top of these items, pour in either home made gravy, or store bought chicken gravy and then cook for an hour or so. You’ll know the chicken is done when it is no longer pink in the middle. Making this sort of meal, you can set it and forget it and go about preparing your house for your special guests.

After dinner, you will undoubtedly serve coffee, as is done at most home events. However, what about the person who doesn’t like coffee? You want to be sure to have something for everyone. So, look into a Keurig brewer to make your home entertaining easier. Keurig brewers come in a few different sizes in order to meet the needs of different people. Some people really like their standard 8 ounce cup of coffee, while others prefer a larger cup. Keurig brewers are available to accommodate these different needs.

Why are Keurig brewers special? For one simple reason, they brew single cups of coffee, tea, or even cocoa. That means that when you have a Keurig in your home, your entertaining is that much easier. These brewers work with pre-measured cups of coffee, tea, or cocoa. So all you will have to do is arm your pantry with different flavors of these things and set them out in a nice bowl during your home parties. By offering something for the myriad of taste buds that will roam your kitchen looking for an after-dinner drink, you will win the accolades of your guests.

Table settings for home parties can be simple or elaborate. Depending on the time of year, you may find flowers more easy to come by, or more difficult. Think of flowers that stand out for your table settings, but not types that are overly fragrant, for this clashes with the aroma of your food. For a great spring time table setting that doesn’t look like it’s straight out of Easter dinner, get a few faux birds nests from the local craft store and fill them with jellybeans or individually wrapped chocolates for a posh and playful table treat.

Your decorating for home parties doesn’t have to be elaborate or outlandish. You don’t have to create a theme for every party. All you need to do is provide a comfortable place where your friends and family can sit back, relax and enjoy one another’s company.

Mark Pickens is a barrista who shares his fascination with coffee through his writing. For more information about Keurig and Keurig brewers, you may follow the links.

Fire Pits and Entertaining Guests

Do you love to host people at your home for entertainment purposes? Do people always walk away from your home raving about the great time they had? It is a great feeling to know that guests enjoy visiting your home for an entertaining evening. If you want to continue successfully hosting your guests or want to begin making your home an entertainment haven, then consider buying a fire pit. Did you know a fire pit can transform your evenings of entertainment and make them more memorable?

For hosts that enjoy entertaining with cocktail parties or dinner parties, fire pits can create an inviting and charming atmosphere. A warm fire always has a way of igniting exuberant conversation amongst guests. There is just something about looking at a fire that makes people feel more romantic, nostalgic, and open with one another.

For the truly entertaining homes, pits can be a source of entertainment inspiration. Do you host poetry readings at your home? Maybe you are always hosting brilliant people at your home that always have something interesting to say. Try hosting a poetry reading beside a fire pit. It can instantly make any poetry reading more dramatic and meaningful. Beautiful orange flames can serve as a focal point on the one person that is speaking and has something important to say, whether it is a poem recitation or important speech.

For a more casual form of entertainment, charades can take a quiet evening and make it thrilling. It is incredibly fun to watch guests try to act like a movie star from a classic movie or act like an exotic animal. Guests enjoy participating in charades, especially when the game takes place near a fire pit. This simple setting may bring back memories to guests of participating in charades as a kid on a camping trip or in the girl scouts or boy scouts. A small fire just makes the charades scene complete, especially at night time.

It is even fun to play trivia games outside by the pit fire. Outburst is a hilarious game, where people need to describe one word without saying the actual word. This can be a fun alternative to charades, if guests are tired of acting out words!

Fire pits add a great touch to creating the perfect venue for entertaining guests. Guests always feel more inspired and will have the time of their life!

Have you ever attended an event that has been prepared to give recognition, distribute awards, or show gratitude to the efforts and accomplishments of several people? If you have, then you would agree when I say that in events like these, meals are usually incredible and venues are commonly carefully chosen… How about the entertainment? I think you would agree with the fact that including a good form of awards banquet entertainment is important as well. And if you are going to organize similar events, you must be aware of what to look for and how to choose your banquet entertainment.

Awards banquet entertainment? How exactly will that help you and your event?

First of all, events like these are geared towards showing gratitude to the efforts and accomplishments of people. Apart from serving them with good food, it is a must that you let them enjoy the event. Enjoy not just by eating, but literally enjoy the whole event. Here is when awards banquet entertainment comes in.

Yes, good food is important but good entertainment is as important as well. Providing a good and appropriate entertainment to your awards banquet will make your event extra special. Aside from letting your audience have fun, entertainment will keep your audiences attention from drifting away. Apart from that, good awards banquet entertainment will serve as a motivation for people attending the event to look forward to future occasions.

What are the things that you should remember in order to pull off an effective awards banquet entertainment?

Hire entertainers whose humor is compatible with your audience. There are a lot of performers and entertainers out there. You have to select those who will deliver jokes and acts that will be comfortable for your audience to laugh about.

Next is try to go for an act that involves audience participation. Let us admit it… awards banquet can be a bit long and dragging. Having an act that will encourage your audience to participate, talk, move, and interact will keep the event alive, and prevent people from feeling bored.

In corporate banquets, it will be better if you get an entertainer who could incorporate your company, products, principles, and even strategies with their performances as this would add up to your workers’ morale and motivation.

If you are going to hire performers, see to it that you have the equipments that she or he will need, like microphone, microphone stands, speakers, music players, and even a large space if she or he is going to perform an extraordinary act. It is best if you hire an entertainer who fits with your resources, or if not, you can hire someone and adjust a bit in order to give him or her the needed equipments.

So there you have it. Things to remember when preparing an awards banquet entertainment have been given. River North Dance Chicago Provides Both Art and Entertainment

River North dance Chicago concert- March 2010- St. Louis

‘A poem shouldn’t mean but be”

Is ‘art’ justified if it’s simply loved? Tons of people love twilight but I’m pretty sure most English majors or serious writers across the country hate it- or at least hate the success it receives -why does everyone insist on being served lower form of art?

About a month ago the jazz company River North dance Chicago came to my hometown of Saint Louis. I had seen them perform once before and they were pretty amazing so I had high hopes for the show. It opened with a piece choreographed by Sherry Zunker who has had a diverse career choreographing for everything from contemporary companies to cruise ships. The piece was a good wake up call for the audience, with a lot of dancers onstage dancing all together to a high-energy pop song.

I didn’t dislike it, I would just call it more ‘entertainment’ than ‘art’. Next was a structured improvisation solo work that didn’t move around the stage very much but was dynamic and surprising. I have a pretty good handle of dance ’steps’ and while I caught things like a perfect quadruple pirouette in the midst, it looked much more -I hate to use this hackneyed word- organic rather than choreographed and was only more engaging for it.

The third piece was three men showing strength, rhythm, and versatility in almost primitive-like movement to loud Taiko drum music. This seems to be a big trend with jazz and contemporary companies these days. I don’t know who it originates with, but my guess is either Alonzo King or maybe Cedar lake. I have the feeling that the audience appreciated the obvious strength and stamina the men had, but perhaps made the mostly older crowd of the Midwest a little uncomfortable.

In all honesty, sometimes the choreography was so stylized that though they still looked great doing it, with three scantily-clad men I was a little reminded of the SNL parody of Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ video where Justin Timberlake and two other guys prance about in leotards and heels imitating the pop icon. The most stunning piece of choreography and dancing I had seen in a long time was ‘Forbidden Boundaries’ choreographed by RNDC artistic director, Frank Chaves.

The piece was three movements, opening with what I can best describe as a ‘Tim Burton’ feel- eerie and melancholy. The dancers did intricate partnering in duets involving stretchy fabric somehow attached to their otherwise very simple costumes while sharing practically no visual communication. To me, it looked as if each pair was representative of a single being fighting with their own fears or limitations, holding themselves back (in this case, often with the fabric). The second movement was a trio of two men and a woman centered at all times between the two and carried, flipped, manipulated by the fabric.

It had a touch of cirque de soleil aerials but managed to not look ‘gimmecky’ or acrobatic. The three dancers managed to display beautiful lines, lyric movement quality, strength and grace through unconventional choreography and use of props. The effect was stunning. The third movement ended the piece and the first act with a sort of ‘battle’ between pairs contrasting the fluid quality and more balletic feel of the second movement with a more aggressive, finale that showed the dancers strong jazz training. It was incredibly touching and ultimately empowering. End act one.

Begin act two; the predominantly over 60 population of the saint Louis audience shuffled back in from the bathrooms and the curtain rose for three more pieces on the bill. I think there is little to say about any of these three. The opening piece was well danced, very contemporary, and had a very fitting title, ‘Suppose’- aptly named because I can only suppose what, if anything, the choreographer was trying to SAY (and if I guessed I would probably be wrong). The next piece was a tango-style pas de deux (dance of two). Very nice, seen stuff like it before. Closing piece: a big Cuban number complete with dance-team fouettes (the most commonplace trick for competitions) that I didn’t find challenging or even that exciting. I would have preferred just the second, third, and fourth piece and have called it a night.

Why was what I thought the best piece sandwiched between more accessible pieces- with a progression of challenging the audience to let us off easy by the end? It sort of felt like the parental routine of attempting to slip vegetables into your fussy kids by covering them in cheese or peanut butter. It really frustrated me that what I found to be communicative, technical, and innovative wasn’t featured as the last impression to take way from the experience.

It seems smart for dance companies to include a range of work in a given show, like a buffet where the audience can pick and choose what to take away. Some can be over-analytical (like me, sometimes to my detriment) or just enjoy the pure entertainment factor. River North did an excellent job of providing a little of everything and all of it was danced well. Everyone is entitled to be their own critic and I stand firm in my judgment- Twilight is poorly written, fast food is bad for you, and fouettes don’t add much artistically. Feel free to disagree.

It’s the year 2010 and we can now access an astounding variety of music performance through the internet. Audio and video streams abound in classical music. The internet offers opportunities to experience performance on demand, in stereo, from some of the most prestigious venues anywhere. These performances feature conductors, performers and arrangements by artists not long ago appreciated by only those able to afford to go to a live performance.

So we’re going to take a look at what’s out there. We’re going to navigate some of the on-line content and point you to some of the orchestras, their musicians, and of course, their best performances, recordings and concerts.

Our searches are going to assume we are seeking an introduction to the genre. We’d like to know what a few of the best symphony orchestras are. Is there an orchestra in your area? Perhaps you can get involved as a volunteer or become acquainted through their website. Is there a site or two which might have a background on the orchestra, its performances, performers? Do they have any mp3’s or streaming audio available on-line? Are there streaming videos available? Are there radio stations broadcasting performances in the category you’re interested in? The answer to most of these questions is yes. So let’s get started and see what we find.

The first thing we’ll do is a keyword search in Google for top symphony orchestras. In case you’ve wondered, a philharmonic orchestra is the same as a symphony. The term philharmonic includes all of the people and activities involved in supporting the orchestra. According to a recent survey by music critics, The Berlin, Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. Vienna and London Symphonies are amongst the elite in the world. Next, let’s enter each symphony into Google and see what we come up with in terms of history and background on these famous orchestras. For more information and links to these orchestras, check out my site link at the bottom of the page.

The Swedign Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam (Royal Symphony) has several sites pertaining to its makeup, history and heritage. The orchestra was started in 1888 and has become famous as a leading orchestra. It has established relationships with several of the world’s best composers including Mahler, Stravinsky, Schoenberg and Rachmoninov. The Berlin Symphony has a very thorough website. On it you will find bios on all 128 musicians, insights in to the workings of its many smaller chamber groups and ensembles and how the orchestra participants mentor young musicians along the way. You will also find an on-line magazine featuring podcasts and interesting articles. The Vienna Symphony is closely associated with the history of Western music. Vienna is the home of Mozart and Beethoven. The orchestra was founded over 160 years ago. Their website carries information on all aspects of the symphony. Like all great orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra features some of the most talented musicians playing today. Shortly, we will discuss a few of the musicians you’ll find bios of, available at each of the sites. The London Symphony is over 100 years old. It is owned by its musicians and it was one of the first orchestras to make gramophone recordings.

I live in Peterborough, North of Toronto. We have a very accomplished orchestra here in Peterborough for a city of it’s size, under the direction of Michael Newnham. The Toronto Symphony is currently under the direction of Peter Oundjian. It has been in operation for over 80 years and it is housed in the brilliant Roy Thompson Hall. To find the nearest symphony to where you live simply type in the city and orchestra into Google. Chances are they have a website.

The musicians of the great orchestras are among the most talented anywhere. Tim Hugh is the principal cellist of the London Symphony. Paul Silverthorne is the principal Violist. They have both taken part in many LSO recordings and. as with many others, they play independently in addition to their work with the symphony. Their bios are available on the LSO website. Guy Braunstein, a student of Pinchas Zukerman, is the first violinist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Andreus Blau has been the principal flute player with the symphony since 1969 and has played under such great conductors as Herbert von Karajan, Claudio Abbado, Yehudi Menuhin and David Oistrakh. He has had many students of whom many have gone on to play with other orchestras.

Associated with most of the great symphony orchestras are tremendous concert halls. Many of these halls can be experienced through virtual tours on-line and indirectly by catching a symphony concert on Youtube. The Berlin Philharmonie is an example. The building went up in the early 1960’s and has become an example of acoustic and architectural design for other halls around the world. As I mentioned earlier, the Toronto Symphony is housed in Roy Thompson Hall, designed by architect Arthur Ericsson. This glass building underwent extensive renovations in 2002 to enhance its acoustics by adding an inner level of wooden cladding. By all reports the reconstruction was very successful.

The internet is teeming with opportunities for you to listen to streaming audio, full stereo classical music through radio stations. You will find a link to a site with over 150 such stations at my link, Symphonia1 at the bottom of the page. In addition to radio stations, mp3’s can be found for download, both for a fee and at no charge. Again, see my site for details.

In the streaming video category, scores of high resolution, full stereo performances are now available online. Performances are found in some of the great concert halls and so you can go for a virtual visit any time you like. My approach to searching for performances has been to simply enter the name of a piece, composer or orchestra. You will find a variety of great performances are available for any of the symphonies I have mentioned and dozens more for orchestras from around the world. Links to several performances are available by visiting my link at the bottom of the page.

Finally, we would be amiss to leave out music education. Let’s not forget that music is for everyone at any age. There are teachers in your area who would love to sign you up to learn to play an instrument. The internet provides so many resources and so much support for learning to play. You can listen or watch pieces played and use them as resources for you practicing. You can join chat groups with players interested in your instrument. You can download sheet music and a variety of educational materials.

The world of classical music performance has never been so accessible. If you’re new to the genre, here’s a place to get acquainted. If not, I hope I have pointed you in the direction of some new resources. In any case, the musicians, recordings, and performances of classical music are out there for you to explore.

Brian Slack is an educator / author. He lives in Ontario, Canada.

Super Mario Birthday party

We’ve all seen it before and many have experienced it first hand. A party, event or a family gathering that just doesn’t fire, that’s running on only three of it’s four cylinders. There’s no vibe, no buzz. Small insular groups scattered around the venue, either too shy or just not willing to make the effort to mingle. Memorable? Only for the wrong reasons.

Let me suggest something to help: a strolling magician. They’re the type that carry what they need in their pockets and move around the event, going from group to group performing close up magic, often using your guests hands as impromptu tables.

Strolling magicians are perfect for these events:

  • Family parties like 18th, 21st, 30th, 40th …right up to 80th,90th’s
  • Christmas Parties
  • Corporate ro Company family fun days
  • Weddings
  • Community Events

You may think the magician’s job is to wow your guests with minor miracles. In part it is. However they have a greater responsibility to YOU, the convenor. This is a responsibility many are unaware of.

Sure their expertly presented magic wows kids and adults alike, but that’s just the start. Their focus is on helping you make your family event a success by working the crowds for you, bringing people together, turning a collection of individuals into a vibrant group.

In a fun, easy manner they elicit information from one group and gently feed it to an adjoining group. If your guests feel as though they don’t know anyone, they will now. Watch conversations spring up like spot fires, only after they’ve finished saying how wonderful the magic was.

Yes they want people to remember them, but their primary job is to have everyone remember the GREAT event YOU put on. Magic is just the vehicle good strolling magicians use to diguise their primary function, that of a friendly social host who makes sure everyone has the opportunity to enjoy themselves at your event or party.

The basics you should expect from a strolling magician:

  • intelligent interaction with your guests
  • dressed to suit the tone of your occasion
  • always family friendly material
  • punctual
  • a good sense of humour
  • and of course…eyepopping magic

How can you tell if you’re speaking to a professional strolling magician when you are doing a ring around? Simple…ask them what they do. If they only talk up their amazing tricks and skills and don’t mention the bulk of what you’ve just read, you’ve got the wrong person. Keep looking, the good ones are out there.

Have you ever considered listing with an entertainer’s agency? If not, you might want to think about it because it could be the way to get into a lot of gigs. This is because an entertainer’s agency seeks to promote and develop your career. More than that, the highest possible talent fees can be achieved with an entertainer’s agency right at your back.

With all the garnered exposure, one might not notice that the agency gets a cut from your talent fees in return to the favor that they did to you. However, this does not create a big issue as more jobs come flocking in without having to look for them. Indeed, an entertainer’s agency can ease up the burdens of a rising talent with added exposure minus the hassle.

A Word of Caution

Agencies bind their talents with contracts, so before you get going and enlist your self in one of them, make sure that the agency that you are dealing with is credible and reputable enough to help you launch your career. There are a lot of scammers out there so be careful when choosing the agency for you.

The Killer Resume

A comprehensive resume detailing your talents and any part performances is sure to impress prospective clients. If you are pursuing a career where physical appearance is a factor, such as acting, attach some of your best pictures with the resume. If your career path inclines toward music, then giving them a sample of your work would be great to up your chances of being noticed. Do not forget to prepare yourself for an on-the-spot demo of your talents.

The Search Is On

There are so many agencies out there so it is not particularly difficult to look for one. However, finding the right one can be a tad problematic. The agency that you should be looking for should be, above all, legitimate. Such an agency should be truly dedicated in developing your talents and assisting you for a possible career.

If you think you have found the right agency, take a little time to check out its history. You can contact some of their talents and ask them questions relevant to the agency’s performance. Gather as much information as possible, so that you would be at a better position to make a sound decision.

The Listing Procedure

When enlisting with the agency of your choice, it is inevitable that you would be presented with contracts. Read everything carefully, and if you have any questions regarding it, feel free to ask. It should be fully understood to avoid misunderstandings in the future. Taking some time to read it is tantamount to protecting your rights as a talent and as a person.

After signing the contract, do not get too excited. Job offers will not be that many, but this takes some time. Listing with and entertainer’s agency requires patience, so cross your fingers for now and who knows, the job offers might even become too much to handle for you. You could just become the next big star that you’ve always dreamed of.

Want a Job in the Entertainment Industry?

If you’ve been thinking that you would like a job in the entertainment industry, here’s your opportunity.

Don’t miss out on the rest of this great entertainment industry jobs report. It’s jam-packed!!

When we’re young and idealistic, we consider only the cream (or the cherries) in the world of entertainment industry jobs—and, if we feel entertainment is our calling, aim for acting, directing, fashion modeling or maybe writing.

But, did you know that there are literally thousands of other equally important (if not imperative) positions in the entertainment industry …from the grips to the CGI assistants to the editors, of both the writing and the film.

And this is just the movie industry. Think about the all exciting reality show, American Idol. For just singers alone, how many different styles and types of entertainment industry jobs exist?

There are the cruise ship singers, the piano lounge singers, the body parts models, Karaoke performers, etc. etc. In other words, not every one is a runway modeling star or a pop icon.

And again, that reference is to just one show, one niche in the industry, one genre (in general, pop), one example…of millions possible.

Television alone. There’s film. There’s music. Then, think about the entertainment industry jobs in subordinate yet collaborative niches: for instance, what, besides American Idol and other hot shows, is one of the biggest selling events on Television?

Football!

Cheerleaders. Announcers. This makes us think of newscasters, maybe, camera men, then special effects professionals. Jot your own associations list. While you are doing that—and reaching as far out, up, or down as you can, remembering the execs, the emcees, the paper-pushers, the makeup artists, the go-cart mechanics and caterers, etc.—I will round up a couple of sources for entertainment industry jobs:

The Bureau of Labor Statistics features entertainment industry jobs, and discusses and describes the job duties, the trends, the requirements, and much more for thousands of jobs. (Their site lists lots of other entertainment industry jobs, like amusement park attendants and entertainers, hotel work, museum work, etc. etc.!)

Also check entertainment industry jobs boards. Many have a database of articles and information to help you define, determine, and decide. Some cost a few dollars; others offer a free trial period.

And check the unions…the union websites like screenwriters’ guilds, and all. You will find that huge or tiny but imperative position!

As I write this, Maggie, one of my former models, is just coming off a TV set for a beach show in North Carolina and is now heading out west to act as a stand-in on the new TV show, “Friday Night Lights”.

TV studios need these stand-ins to represent the actors while setting the lights, etc. for the next scene. Maggie tells me that the money is pretty good (and she’s working!).

So, you see, there are entertainment industry jobs that you may not even know exist today but you may be working in one of them tomorrow.

Just do some searching online for entertainment industry jobs and let me know if you are successful. Hope you are!!

As your knowledge about entertainment industry jobs continues to grow, you will begin to see how versatile the market is. Knowing how something relates to your goals and dreams is important too.
