Dora the Explorer episodes provide a mix of both entertainment and education for it’s young audience and are suitable for the social and academic development of preschoolers. Choices abound when looking for books and resources about cooking and easy entertaining. The Food Network has fueled renewed interest in cooking and home entertaining to an astonishing level. Television shows present celebrity cooks/chefs who give weekly creative ideas and know-how to viewers. Internet cooking sites and blogs are bursting at the seams with creative ideas for entertaining.
How does someone new to cooking and entertaining assimilate all of the information? Is it possible for a beginner to wade through the phenomenal amount of information without being completely overwhelmed? Choosing entertainment for your Christmas party can be a daunting task. You have a group of 100plus people who never socialise with each other, generally only talk to the people they know and spend most of the evening avoiding their boss!
Not a situation that shouts fun!
There is however a simple solution, one that is often overlooked or left until last in the event organising process, entertainment.
After organising entertainment for the last 13 years I can honestly say that entertainment can either make or break a Christmas party and this depends on how much research is done by the organiser.
Here’s a checklist to help you choose the best Christmas party entertainment for your company;
1) Find out the average age of your guests (there’s no point in booking a DJ if you guests are over 50 and will probably leave straight after the meal)
2) Find out the average gender of your guests (if most of your guests are female you probably won’t want Belly Dancers!)
3) Are you guests bringing their partners? (If so you’ll need to make the entertainment more general so having a company quiz is probably out.)
4) Ask you guests what they’d like (it sounds obvious but simply asking your guests what type of entertainment they’d like is sometimes the best way to please the majority)
5) Find out your entertainment budget as early as possible (there’s no point spending hours talking to Christmas party DJ’s, bands, magicians and casinos if you know you’ve only got £100 to spend)
When you get the answers from this checklist you’re ready to start finding your entertainment.
Now comes the second conundrum, do you use an entertainment agent, go directly to the acts or use the entertainment that your venue recommend?
This can completely confuse the average Christmas party organiser.
It’s probably best to only go directly to the act if you’re only having one entertainment act, think of all the stress it’s going to be having three or four acts calling you on the day asking the same questions!
This is where going with an entertainment agent can help, the agent will look after all the acts so you don’t have to and they’ll deal with all those small questions that will just add to your stress!
If your venue does recommend an entertainment agent then it’s probably best to go with this option, they’ve been recommended for a reason and their acts have probably all worked at the venue before so they’ll know how to get in, set up and who to speak to if there are problems.

Drinks Reception Entertainment
This can set the tone for the whole evening, if you’re guests relax and talk to each other then you’re going to relax too! So how do you break the ice?
The best way to do this is with some ‘Walkabout entertainment’ for example a Close Hand Magician or Caricaturist.
Close Hand Magicians are great because they subtly mingle in with your guests, come up to small crowds of people and draw in other guests to watch. This means that by the end of the trick all the guests should be left laughing and commenting ‘how did they do that!’ with someone they don’t really know, in effect breaking the ice.
Caricaturists do the same thing with the added bonus that you’re left with a gift to put above the computer at work.
Entertainment after the main meal
It’s sometimes a fun idea to have a surprise element to your evening and what better way to do it than by having your waiters who have been quietly serving you all night suddenly break into song!
This will delight all your guests, make them laugh and stop people talking shop at the end of the meal.
Main Christmas party entertainment
This is the most exciting party of the entertainment, the main event! Will it be a Christmas party band or a DJ, or if you can afford it, both.
A Christmas party band adds a great live feel and if they’re good, can have the immediate effect of getting every dancing. A DJ will do the same but with the added bonus that they generally play for longer, although it can be a bit cheesier and generally it will take people longer to get up and dance.
Other Christmas party entertainment ideas
Other ideas include Casinos and Belly Dancers which can be great if you have mainly male guests. Henna artists, Butlers in the Buff and Chocolate Fountains are all better for female guests unless everyone is on a diet!
Remember, when you’re guests are leaving the event, the biggest talking point isn’t the food, decorations, venue or the staff, it’s the entertainment.

You are looking for someone to entertain children for a very special event (e.g Weddings, Parties etc) and making the right choice is very important. Do not focus on price, the cheapest is not always the best. Find out what they offer then judge whether it is good value for money.
* Look for Professionalism
Any good entertainer will look and behave in a professional manner. They will want their business to look smart and professional as well. If little or no effort has gone into their advert or website, how much effort do you think they put into their shows? Search for the adverts or websites that look professional and indeed check to see whether the performer is a full-time pro. You should also beware of agencies; they have numerous entertainers on their books and you may not be booking the person shown on their website. Also costs are often higher as the agent adds commission to the entertainer’s fee.
* Knowing What Services to Book
Having found an entertainer that looks the part you need to dig a bit deeper to find out what types of services they provide and any party formats they may have. If you are looking for a 2 hour party, will the entertainer entertain all the children for the whole period (food break excepted)? This is very important, if the entertainer advertises games and the children are “out” as the game progresses, the child that is out is now free to cause all sorts of trouble! This type of game is not recommended and neither is face painting. If the entertainer has come on their own they can only paint one child at a time, so what do all the rest of the children do? You need to find an entertainer that engages the children for the duration of the party, keeps them involved and most of all has lots of fun with them. Prizes are a great way to grab children’s attention and good entertainers will use these to good effect.
* What To Look For in Your Entertainer
Having established what the entertainer can offer, ask how they are qualified. Questions to ask:
Are you a member of any magic societies or organisations for professional entertainers?
Do you have public liability insurance?
Are you CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) police checked?
The CRB check is becoming more a standard amongst entertainers, although many will argue it is out of date the day after it is issued, an enhanced check will show all criminal convictions the person may have. There is no reason why an entertainer should not have a CRB certificate they can show unless they have something to hide.
* Discussing Your Requirements
A good entertainer will communicate in a professional, manner and always provide a written or email confirmation of the event, what is to be performed and the cost, this way all parties understand what will happen on the day. Try to imagine the way the party will go and is the entertainer providing a range of entertainment for the duration of the party? This is very important as the magician may perform a 1 hour magic show, which initially may sound fine, but 1 hour is a long time for the children to stay sat down however good the show! Children’s magicians are actually starting to understand this and some are starting to offer discos, games and even balloon modelling to compliment the magic, which gives a whole host of activities for the children at the party which keeps their interest high.
Finally, how does enthusiastic does the entertainer sound? If they don’t seem excited about the show when you speak to them, this may reflect in the quality of their work. Start Getting More Entertainment For Less Money
Cable bills, satellite bills, movie tickets, music downloads, book shopping, magazine subscriptions, sporting events – keeping yourself entertained sure costs money. Spending on entertainment is easy to do because it’s highly desirable, but if you don’t pay attention, then it’s easy to overspend and not get much value.
First look at what you spend on television entertainment, which for most people means a satellite or cable subscription. Everyone knows these bills go up all time and you don’t get any more content. A conservative monthly price for cable or satellite television is $30, but people tend to be in the $40 to $50 range, and people who get premium channels might have bills in the $75 to $100 range. At any level, that is a high cost so you can flip through the channels and watch a lot of commercials. Even a modest $40 a month bill equals $480 a year on television.

With my NetFlix subscription I get any movie, documentary, or television show I want to watch and I do it on my schedule. I’ve arranged for significant annual savings on my television viewing and improved the quality of my entertainment. I no longer waste time channel surfing and watching commercials. And keep in mind that watching commercials fills you with longing for items you either can’t afford or don’t need anyway. So, reducing your exposure to television commercials could help you save money because your shopping impulses will not be triggered as much.
Now I know one of the big complaints about mail DVD services is waiting for them to come in the mail. During those inevitable postal interludes I recommend going to your local library. You can check out books and also get music CDs and movie DVDs for free. Public libraries are an excellent and friendly source of entertainment for everyone in a family.
Admittedly libraries offer better selections of books than other media, but books are also one of the best forms of entertainment and learning around. They are the original mobile devices after all. Reading books can get to be an addictive activity as well, and it’s a great habit to nurture in children. Even when you end up purchasing books, they offer hours of commercial-free entertainment for prices typically ranging from $8 to $40. For avid readers who also buy books, the library provides an important tool for keeping the book budget under control.
Another medium for reading that is catching on with people is the ebook. Although an investment is needed in an ebook reading device, like the Sony or the Kindle, you can then save on book shipping costs and often obtain titles for lower rates than the hardcover or paperback prices.
Smart choices about how you spend or don’t spend your entertainment dollars can lead to significant boosts in your enjoyment of your favorite media and more money in your pocket. Thinking for a few minutes about what you really like and your options can save you money that you can put toward savings, necessities, or even more entertainment! You’ll always need more of that.

Friends and family gather on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day to celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. Special gatherings sometimes supplemented by television programs – the ball drop in Times Square, the Tournament of Roses parade, or football games galore – also provide entertainment and a reason to party.
Of course you will want to feed this crowd, and make it easy on yourself at the same time. Year end is a time to wind down from Christmas, Hanukkah and the mad rush of holiday shopping. Plan for a New Year buffet to make entertaining easy.
- Select your menu. Make-ahead dishes like egg-based breakfast casseroles or baked appetizers help keep it flexible, so you can bake or reheat as needed as guests come and go.
- Choose the decor. Start with a color scheme or theme, and plan around it. Casual works well for daytime, and a bit more festive or elegant for the evening, but certainly not a hard-and-fast rule. If using team colors, for example, will make the evening’s events more lively, then plan for fun. For elegance, go with combinations of white, silver and gold.
- Use your dishes. Stacks of white plates work all the time. If you have salad, appetizer or luncheon sizes, those are especially handy. Mix and match your dinnerware sets for creative expression and experimentation, and add extra pieces as needed from after-holiday clearance sales and thrift store hunting.
- Keep an eye on the temperature. Chafing dishes, hot plates and slow cookers help keep hot foods hot over time, and the same with ice buckets, nested trays and tubs for those foods that need to stay cold (not to mention the possibility of champagne). Set them up in stations to help your guests circulate, as well as having electrical outlets or sinks handy as needed.
- Put your crew to work. Guests can help you keep the food and drink flowing, as well as the conversation. Let them assist and have a good time as well. The more the merrier.
Year end is a great time to enjoy old friends (people, dinnerware and recipes). A relaxing buffet can make it easy, both to celebrate the outgoing and welcome the incoming wonderful new year.
