Saving Money on Entertainment

One of the easiest expenses for most families to reduce is the entertainment budget. It is possible for the average family to keep themselves entertained and save hundreds of dollars on entertainment every year.

One of the biggest interest costs many families have is satellite or cable TV which can cost around $100 a month. Most of us have got satellite or cable TV because there was little or nothing to watch on broadcast television. Unfortunately, free broadcast TV in most of the US is getting worse than ever but there are some healthy alternatives.

DVD and Blue Ray players, offer some of the best entertainment available with almost every movie and TV spectacle ever made, now available on disk. This means that there’s a virtually unlimited supply of interest available through these technologies at little or no cost.

In most communities the public library now carries a large selection of DVDs, these may include many different movies and TV shows. These discs are available to library patrons who are willing to follow the rules, it is also possible to secure rentals you can pick them up at your local library.

Libraries do not just have discs present many of them also supply video games and music CDs. This means that the public library can provide most of your family’s enjoyment for free.

Another great source of cheap entertainment is the Red Box and other video rental machines found in many supermarkets. These machines rental DVDs for a remarkably low price, usually a dollar; and they do not charge late fees. Such machines are reasonable and extremely easy to use.

There are also services such as Netflix which take DVDs to your home for a modest fee, these services, are reasonable, rentals usually cost about $10 a month, and convenient. One advantage to such services is that the mail carrier brings the album directly to your home. A bigger benefit is that they have a extensive catalogue of DVDs that can be ordered easily on line.

Switching from cable to DVD can have some other advantages for parents as well. When they use DVDs parents can have complete control over their children’s entertainment choices.

The kids can only see the DVDs the parents want them to see, while this reduces the likelihood of children seeing sexually explicit and or violent programs that parents do not want them to see. It can also keep programming that runs counter to the family’s religious beliefs out of the home.

Another option the technologically minded should look into is videos downloaded through the Internet. This is a relatively new technology that is still inconvenient for the average person, but it is getting better.

There are quite a few services that make video including free episodes of classic TV shows available online. One problem is that there is no standard practice to transfer video from a computer to a TV set. Fortunately, most recent TV sets have connections for computers.

There are also DVD players and video game systems like the X-Box which allow users to play videos downloaded from the net. These systems are sometimes much more expensive but most times they are cheaper than cable.

Commercialization is a word which evokes ambivalence not in every sphere of human life. But talk of sporting events and there you are. Debates have shrouded over this topic ever since the business of enchasing entertainment began. Let them do the talking as long as we are able to keep the spirit of fun and entertainment intact and march ahead on the subject of sports event ticket and the ways to grab them.

Sports, since the days of yore has been seen as an underlying source of live entertainment. The air of uncertainty, sense of excitement and spirit of passion make sporting events a true crowd puller and one can not deny the fact that in certain countries some sports and the events hosting them enjoy a much elated status so much so that the level of expectation may cause breakdown or under performance for a few sport stars. Sporting events are arguably one of the most rewarding and followed event entertainment.

If this is how sports and the events are performing, for sports aficionados, the arrangement of sports event ticket leaves a big question to be answered. Days before the D-day, tickets are completely sold and in case the event is hyped, this figure could go up to weeks. In this scenario Internet comes to the rescue of fans.

There are many websites flooding the web these days who offer these tickets without much fretting out and generally prove to be cost effective as these websites offer discounts and cashbacks to boost their sales figure. Easily available tickets have already given these websites a yielding launching pad and they are all set to soar as their business is entwined with entertainment which was, is and shall be quintessential to human life.

This article will tell you what you will need to consider when hiring a magician to entertain at your wedding. It helps you to consider when you can best use a magician in your order of events, and how to go about selecting a good magician for your wedding.

This information specifically relates to hiring a close-up magician to entertain the adult guests at your wedding. Some magicians specialise in entertaining children, and this can be a great way to keep children occupied throughout the speeches. However, these performers tend to be a lot more readily available, and a bit of asking around will help you source a good quality local childrens entertainer at a reasonable price. Similarly, some magicians specialise in stage presentations, but this sort of presentation is very rarely appropriate for a wedding, and the more ambient style of close-up magic is more generally suitable.

Booking a magician who specialises in entertaining adults is a very different proposition – there aren’t very many about who do it well, and it can be difficult to know where to start. The first thing to consider should be what you want to achieve by having a magician entertain at your wedding, and determine where this can best fit into your order of events.

When To Use A Wedding Magician

Close-up magicians are usually used to provide entertainment at two different points in the wedding day. The first is after the ceremony when the magician can mingling with guests while wedding photographs are being taken. The drinks reception is also usually held at this point, and having the magician perform at this stage acts as an excellent ice-breaker. This can then continue with the magician performing at the tables between the courses of the wedding breakfast up until the start of the speeches.

The other popular time slot is to have the magician perform during the evening. This means that day guests are entertained after the meal and speeches, and any evening guests are welcomed with a little entertainment to get them in the mood. One thing to bear in mind when using a magician at this stage is how the magic will fit with any music you may have planned. Usually most venues have a separate area away from the dance floor, such as a bar area, and the magician can be placed here to entertain any guests who aren’t interested in the dancing, and those who are just taking a break. Or, if there is no separate area, you can have the magician start following the wedding breakfast and perform up until the evening music starts. This helps the day guests to break with the formality of the days events and any evening guests are welcomed with a little entertainment to get them in the mood.

Of course there is a lot of flexibility here and a magician experienced in wedding entertainment will be able to work in with your plans for the day.

Things To Consider When Using Magicians At A Wedding:

Speeches and music are two key traditional aspects of a wedding which should be considered when using wedding magicians.

Speeches: No matter how carefully you brief the best man and the father of the bride to keep it brief, often as not speeches will overrun! Many people find it best to make the speeches a natural start or end point for the magic to avoid paying for the magician’s waiting time.

Music: You will need to consider how your magician will fit in with any music you have planned. Magicians rely on people being able to follow what is being said. Three things can help: having the music at a lower level, having a separate “quiet zone” for the magician to work in, or a large room where one end will be quieter. But if the DJ or Band is expected to be louder, you will get better value for money by changing the timing to avoid a clash.

Where To Find A Magician:

Avoid using a local Yellow Pages or a similar directory to find a magician for your party. Magicians who perform for adult audiences are a rare breed, and while you may get lucky and find that you have a very good magician in your area, the chances are that you will wind up interviewing magicians who are part time and have very little actual performing experience, or magicians who specialise in performing for children and have very little experience in entertaining adult audiences.

Instead, use a web search, or look to find a national directory of entertainers, and cast your net over a good sized geographic base – experienced performers are more than happy to travel to a booking.

Choosing The Right Magician For Your Wedding:

Once you’ve drawn up a shortlist, here’s what to look at before you finalise your choice.

References, References, References!

Cast a careful eye over any quotes from previous clients. Are they from recognised and reputable UK companies and identifiable individuals, or could they just have been gathered from friends and family?
The ability to astonish should come as standard, but you also need to make sure the references show that the magician you book also has the personality to interact with your guests. Look for someone who is more than just astonishing – hire a magician who is entertaining and, moreover, enjoyable to be around.

Experience

Plenty of positive references show that you’re looking at a magician with broad experience. It can be a good idea to hire a magician who has worked UK-wide and, ideally, internationally because this usually shows a depth of experience.
You may also want to consider whether the magician is a full time performer. While there are a number of very good part-timers in the UK who shouldn’t be overlooked, the fact that a magician is a full-time performer will generally act as a good indicator of experience and ability. You can’t always glean this from a website so it’s a good idea to ask.
Look to hire a magician with experience with weddings. For example, some specialise in close up magic for adult audiences in hospitality situations. Others have a more general approach, performing at children’s parties, as a corporate speaker, on stage, etc. Each of these different performing situations requires different skills and abilities, especially when it comes to audience interaction. Be sure that the references that you rely on relate to events and functions similar to your wedding.

Style and manner:

Consider what will work well for you. Some acts are based on poking fun at the audience, but, for a day of celebration like a wedding, consider whether it may be more appropriate to look for someone who creates fun for your guests and maintains a more relaxed atmosphere.
If you are expecting a wide variety of guests at your event, look for someone with references that indicate a breadth of appeal. Conversely, if your guests are quite similar, for example in age group or background, you may want to hire a magician with references that relate to that particular type of guest.

Memberships

It is a good idea to hire a magician who is a member of a recognised international magical organisation such as the UK’s The Magic Circle. The Magic Circle, in particular, insists on members being tested by examination before being allowed to join. However, don’t make membership of such an organisation the sole basis of your decision – this simply indicates a basic level of technical ability. The above information shows how to look at experience, personality and performance style.

Your entertainer could be trashing your industry behind your back. Use Google and other Web research tools to check out anyone you are thinking of hiring.

We live in a technologically-advanced world of instant communication. There are so many benefits to having such a massive quantity of information at our fingertips. For instance, if you’re looking for a caterer specialising in East Indian cuisine, just a few taps on your keyboard, a couple mouse clicks, can yield you a list of six different options, all within a ten mile radius of your event venue.

But, there’s a darker side to such open lines of communications. You could be hiring an entertainer who is also a writer. Blogging can be harmless enough, but imagine your client’s – or your boss’s — reaction when your after-dinner musician takes the stage and spends the first fifteen minutes railing against animal cruelty. But you work for the beef industry.

Why would a performer take a gig with an association or group that is completely opposite her personal morals? Well, many would have the integrity to say no, instead of jeopardizing their working relationship. But some might look at it as a platform to change minds. After all, she’s always been a vegan animal rights advocate, it says so on her blog. And her Facebook page. And her MySpace. And Twitter. If you didn’t know, that’s not her fault … right?

Don’t let your event run away from you – check out every possible source. Start with Google or another search engine. That’s where you’ll get the most thorough list of where your entertainer’s name appears. Okay, so you’ll likely get a good deal of junk to sort through, also, but it’s worth it to know that you’ve hired a professional who really fits with your industry.

Wedding Entertainment – Salsa

This is superb at weddings because Salsa is a naturally fun and extremely social dance that is very easy to learn when taught well.

The beauty is your Salsa teacher can rotate partners every 4 or so minutes, meaning your guests will interact and socialise very, very quickly in a happy, non threatening way. Laughter and high energy is included automatically as part of the dance!

A quick tour of the history of Salsa

Salsa is a Latin dance that originated in Cuba with a heavy African influence as a result of the slave trade. African drum beats merged with string instruments and vocals creating a new earthy rhythm. Over the century’s, as Salsa musicians travelled and exchanged ideas the music has taken on a whole new vibe and is danced nearly all over the developed world, and in each region you can get a completely different feel, but the dance steps are pretty much the same anywhere in the world, even if some start on different beats.

Another option for your wedding is Merengue, which is even easier to learn than Salsa simply because it is a two step dance, if your guests can walk, they can Merengue because all you need do is shift your feet and hips from left to right so you dance on a one, two; one, two rhythm.

Because of its simplicity and energetic beat Merengue can be a great kick-start to reception proceedings.

To get a real flavour of either of these two dances take a local class before your big day – you may even get hooked.

There’s only one way to get to Alex “Hitch” Hitchens, a professional “date doctor for men”- by referral. If Alex meets with a potential client it’s because the guy has been referred to him and that’s the ONLY way he’ll meet with a potential client.

People in the entertainment industry can be equally as hard to reach, but the power of a referral can make it all possible.

With everything on the line (money, reputations, jobs) people don’t want to hire someone they don’t know. Here’s another Hollywood catch 22: how do you get to know the people who won’t meet you if they don’t know you? You get to know them through the people you already know. In other words, you get a referral from a mutual acquaintance.

If you’re someone who doesn’t like making phone calls, a referral can boost your confidence because it creates an instant connection with a stranger. You become the mutual friend or associate. Because of the mutual associate, potential clients felt more comfortable meeting with Hitch, and he knew that his clients wouldn’t send him someone who wasn’t serious about being in a committed relationship.

Ask all the people on your Contact List for referrals. Be clear that you’re not asking for a recommendation. This would mean putting their reputation on the line by saying that you are the best person for the job. Although, it would be fine if they offered to give you a recommendation, you are simply asking to use their name as an introduction so when you call the new person, you are not calling cold, you are calling with an introduction from a mutual acquaintance. If you know someone your contact should meet, offer to trade referrals.

When requesting the referral, ask for an introduction to be made, a call on your behalf, or permission to use their name. If they plan to make the introduction, or call on your behalf, ask when you should follow up with the person who said they are going to make the call on your behalf. You want to follow up with them to see if they made the call and how you should proceed. It’s important to remain on top of the situation.

Once you receive referrals, you shouldn’t wait more than a few days to call the person you were referred to. The contacts who gave you the referrals may be so excited, they call their acquaintances to tell them to expect your call. If you wait too long, the acquaintance may think you’re unreliable.

When you call your referrals, design a strategy for your calls. Know what your objective for the call is before you make it so you’ll know when you’ve achieved it. Plan your request for follow-up in advance as well. Use, “This has been really helpful. If I have more questions in a month or so, may I call you again?” If they say, “Yes,” write it in your book to call them in a month. Or, “I appreciate you watching my reel. May I call you for feedback in two weeks?”

Referrals are the best way to meet the people you want to know. Using a mutual friend’s name when contacting a person you don’t know makes the whole process easier. Focus on meeting your friend’s friends, making it about friendship not work, and you will find referrals to be an extremely valuable business tool!

And Action!

1. Ask five people on your Contact List for three referrals.

2. Know your objective before you make your calls.

3. Call all of your referrals.

4. Schedule your follow-up with each person with whom you choose to continue building a relationship. You can ask if it would be okay to call if you have any questions in the future; if the answer is yes, mark your calendar to call back with a question in a month. Or you can mention your plan to take action on one of their suggestions; tell them you’ll let them know how it turns out.

The people who sought out a referral to Hitch, really wanted love. Despite possibly being nervous to call him, the results they wanted outweighed the fear. You really want work, act in spite of your fears and get referrals!

One Piece Opening 3 (Funimation Uncut Dub)

It may seem improbable to young Americans today, but before 1948, home entertainment existed in the form of radio. Prior to 1948, in fact, all American homes had a large radio (it was actually more like furniture) that was the centerpiece of the family living room.

Each evening after dinner mom, dad and the kids would gather around the radio to enjoy mysteries, comedy shows and musical entertainment. They had nothing to look at; they could only listen and imagine.

Interestingly, when television began appearing in American homes in 1948, there were few homes that actually had TVs and there was very little programming for those that did. There may have been no more than five or six stations broadcasting to very few viewers. TV screens were very small, in black and white only, required the use of a picture tube… and all programming went off the air at about 11:00 P.M. each evening.

When programming ended for the day, it was replaced by “test patterns.” They would fill the screen until programming resumed early the next morning. Of course, there was no satellite television back then, no cable… just a handful of over-the-air networks providing very limited programming.

Clearly, home entertainment is different in the 21st century. Small black and white TV screens have been replaced by huge full color flat screens. The original five or six (or perhaps seven) original national and local networks have ballooned to a point where viewers now have access, on demand, to hundreds of networks offering a broad array of entertainment choices.

Television in this new century is “cutting edge,” very technologically-advanced and the more astute and actively-engaged programming operators are in the forefront and working with TV networks to enhance and improve the home entertainment experience for American audiences.

It is an ongoing process, but the future certainly looks bright. In fact, it’s reasonable to believe that the home entertainment experience will improve exponentially in the years ahead. Clearly, when it comes to enjoying TV at home, there are no limits.

It is also important to note that 21st century television will offer more than just entertainment… it will be where commerce takes place, as well; a place where a viewer can make a large purchase for an automobile or a home. And smart and savvy programming operators will be on hand to help make it possible.

MAKE $$$ FAST::: EASY MONEY SIMPLE STEPS

1. Are you a professional performer?

2. Do you carry public liability insurance? Accidents can and do happen.

3. Are you CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) Police checked? You don’t want a criminal at your children’s party.

4. What range entertainment do you provide?

5. What games are played? Are the children “out” or involved throughout all the games? It’s most important the children are not “out” as they’ll have nothing to do while the rest of game continues.

6. Is the entertainment varied? A one hour magic show is a long time for a child to sit through however good it may be. However, split the show up with puppets, magic tricks and balloon modelling and even a disco and one or two hours will fly by.

7. Are you a member of any magic societies or organisations like Equity? (Equity is the Union of Performers and Artists) Although this is not a guarantee of quality of work, it will be safer than hiring someone who is not a professional.

8. Do you have a website? If so, have a look at it to see how professional the entertainer looks.

9. Speak to the entertainer on the phone. If they come across well on the phone, they should come across well on the day.

10. Don’t focus on price. All of the things mentioned above, insurance, memberships etc cost money and have to be paid for so the professional performer will sometimes be a little more expensive than someone performing as a hobby. This does not mean all amateur entertainers are bad, but if they are not insured or checked you could leave yourself open to a claim, or even worse have no entertainer on the day because their day job has taken preference over your booking.

I hope you have found this useful and of help in organising your party or event.

December was a landmark in video gaming’s conquest of American culture, with Major League Gaming signing $1.75 million in exclusive contracts with the top 7 pro gamers on 18 December. MLG currently airs a weekly TV program on USA Network, and the revenue power of online gaming is beginning to flex its muscles.

3 days later (21 December), Johnny Damon, star center fielder of the NY Yankees, announced his alliance with the Global Gaming League, to form the Professional Ballplayers Gaming League. The PBGL will enable Joe Videogamer to play with and against some of his favorite pro baseball players in the league’s chosen field of online combat, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Xbox Live.

Then there’s the steady convergence of Hollywood and video gaming toward a common destination. Japanese game publisher Capcom has already enjoyed a satisfying relationship with Tinsel Town when it licensed its Resident Evil property to Impact Pictures and Sony Pictures for three separate productions (a third is currently in the works). Now they are stepping into a partnership with Hyde Park Entertainment to produce a Street Fighter movie.

Online gaming is proving itself to be quite capable of standing alone, however. As of June of last year, Microsoft divulged that more than 500 million full games of Halo had been played on Xbox Live. We are not saying 500 million players, but half a billion full matches, that may have as many as 16 players at one time. This would appear to be more of a trend, than a passing fad.

We do not claim to be the sharpest pencil in the box, but even we can see the possibilities. How long will it be, before other sports organizations see the potential in following Johnny Damon’s lead? What if game developers started creating games specifically for this type of application? EA Sports, are you listening? Imagine the enthusiasm of football fans if they could play Madden 2007 with and against their favorite football stars online, during the off-season? Off-season would no longer be a killswitch for the leagues. Public relations and interest could continue year around. What about pro wrestling? Hockey? What would a NASCAR fan do to race against his favorite driver online? The possibilities are endless.

Video gaming, and in particular, online gaming, is going to change the Entertainment Industry as we know it.
