How to Organise Your Christmas Party Entertainment and Have a Fun Evening Too
Choosing entertainment for your Christmas party can be a daunting task. You have a group of 100plus people who never socialise with each other, generally only talk to the people they know and spend most of the evening avoiding their boss!
Not a situation that shouts fun!
There is however a simple solution, one that is often overlooked or left until last in the event organising process, entertainment.
After organising entertainment for the last 13 years I can honestly say that entertainment can either make or break a Christmas party and this depends on how much research is done by the organiser.
Here’s a checklist to help you choose the best Christmas party entertainment for your company;
1) Find out the average age of your guests (there’s no point in booking a DJ if you guests are over 50 and will probably leave straight after the meal)
2) Find out the average gender of your guests (if most of your guests are female you probably won’t want Belly Dancers!)
3) Are you guests bringing their partners? (If so you’ll need to make the entertainment more general so having a company quiz is probably out.)
4) Ask you guests what they’d like (it sounds obvious but simply asking your guests what type of entertainment they’d like is sometimes the best way to please the majority)
5) Find out your entertainment budget as early as possible (there’s no point spending hours talking to Christmas party DJ’s, bands, magicians and casinos if you know you’ve only got £100 to spend)
When you get the answers from this checklist you’re ready to start finding your entertainment.
Now comes the second conundrum, do you use an entertainment agent, go directly to the acts or use the entertainment that your venue recommend?
This can completely confuse the average Christmas party organiser.
It’s probably best to only go directly to the act if you’re only having one entertainment act, think of all the stress it’s going to be having three or four acts calling you on the day asking the same questions!
This is where going with an entertainment agent can help, the agent will look after all the acts so you don’t have to and they’ll deal with all those small questions that will just add to your stress!
If your venue does recommend an entertainment agent then it’s probably best to go with this option, they’ve been recommended for a reason and their acts have probably all worked at the venue before so they’ll know how to get in, set up and who to speak to if there are problems.

Drinks Reception Entertainment
This can set the tone for the whole evening, if you’re guests relax and talk to each other then you’re going to relax too! So how do you break the ice?
The best way to do this is with some ‘Walkabout entertainment’ for example a Close Hand Magician or Caricaturist.
Close Hand Magicians are great because they subtly mingle in with your guests, come up to small crowds of people and draw in other guests to watch. This means that by the end of the trick all the guests should be left laughing and commenting ‘how did they do that!’ with someone they don’t really know, in effect breaking the ice.
Caricaturists do the same thing with the added bonus that you’re left with a gift to put above the computer at work.
Entertainment after the main meal
It’s sometimes a fun idea to have a surprise element to your evening and what better way to do it than by having your waiters who have been quietly serving you all night suddenly break into song!
This will delight all your guests, make them laugh and stop people talking shop at the end of the meal.
Main Christmas party entertainment
This is the most exciting party of the entertainment, the main event! Will it be a Christmas party band or a DJ, or if you can afford it, both.
A Christmas party band adds a great live feel and if they’re good, can have the immediate effect of getting every dancing. A DJ will do the same but with the added bonus that they generally play for longer, although it can be a bit cheesier and generally it will take people longer to get up and dance.
Other Christmas party entertainment ideas
Other ideas include Casinos and Belly Dancers which can be great if you have mainly male guests. Henna artists, Butlers in the Buff and Chocolate Fountains are all better for female guests unless everyone is on a diet!
Remember, when you’re guests are leaving the event, the biggest talking point isn’t the food, decorations, venue or the staff, it’s the entertainment.

How Many Shows did they do Last Year?
Responsible business owners know their numbers. This is an answer they should be able to give you off the top of their head. If they won’t give you a straight answer they may be trying to conceal the fact that they’re new to the market. There’s nothing wrong with hiring an enthusiastic newbie, but they should be up front about their experience.
What does Their Website Look Like?
Modern business owners realize that their website is the “face” of their business. Any professional is going to want to put their best foot forward. If their website looks like it was designed in 1996, consider looking elsewhere.
Ask for Details About the Performance
If you’re hiring a balloon twister, ask what kinds of sculptures they make. If you’re hiring a magician, ask what kinds of acts they perform and what their audience participation is like. Get the idea? The point here is that any professional entertainer is going to be intimately familiar with the product they’re selling you. If they stumble on this point, move on.
When in Doubt, Ask for References
Be sure to qualify those references. Relatives and close friends don’t count. You want to hear from bona fide customers who were satisfied with the entertainment that was provided.
Hiring a good children’s entertainer can be a very rewarding and worthwhile experience. The extra time and effort you spend checking up on their credentials will ensure that your money isn’t wasted and your child’s party is a success.

The Entertainment Industry is Giving Us Hell
Plato said, “Those who tell the stories rule society.”
The images and stories that top the list of influence in our culture are packaged by Hollywood and the entertainment industry in the form of movies, music, pornography and gambling. These “recreational” exposures are shaping the values and character of our culture, and more subtly, that of our next generation.
The film in our mind’s camera portrays the choice of our exposure. Like film we reflect the image of what we “click” on. The imprint is indelibly fixed to mold and shape our mind, emotions and behavior. We become what we choose to see and think. Our god is whatever preoccupies our thoughts and shapes our choices and values.
The profound impact of story content and imagery on the minds and psyche of our culture, particularly our young people, has far reaching implications. We are being more shaped by our culture than we are molding and shaping our culture. The drift is without a rudder on a sea of uncertainty just blowin’ in the wind at the mercy of the current.
On a recent trip to Asia I encountered a merchant that asked, “Are all Americans rich, greedy and sex crazy?” I asked him where he got that idea and he said, “TV, movies and the Internet.” This perception or misperception, however you view it, is reality to them and is now coming back to bite us like a giant viper. “Our entertainment industry is the number one culprit,” according to Mortimer Zuckerman, Editor of U.S. News and World Report.
The entertainment industry is driven by what sells. The images projected by pornography, promiscuity, arrogance, greed and moral decadence all leave a residual odor wafting around the world which clouds the virtues of freedom, democracy and opportunity. The lost values of what is good, pure, true and noble have given us a dark side image obscuring our virtues.
President Obama said at Hampton University in southeastern Virginia, “iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations become a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation,”
Has America, once the envy of the world, become the enmity of the world? Should we be surprised by the growing hatred and America bashing? Have we not given the Al-Qaida reason for their violent revolutionary theory and practice? Our democratic message of liberty without responsibility and moral substance seems hollow and hypocritical.
PEW Research Center published their thirteen country poll which clearly shows America’s image in decline. “Favorable opinion of the United States has fallen in most of the countries surveyed. It has dropped most dramatically in Europe, India, Indonesia and especially in Middle East countries.”
Listen and you will hear the foreign voices saying, as I have, “You Americans are preoccupied with pleasure. Your families are disintegrating. You create and peddle pornography. Your per capita crime rates top the world charts. You appear to be self righteous, greedy, arrogant bullies.” We have aided Bin Laden’s propaganda promotion and given him a weapon to recruit terrorists around the world.
America has been at its best in times of great challenge. We forge a future of hope, not by our poverty of creativity and imagination, but with a passion to turn our problems into opportunities. America’s image can be restored with friendships that refute the misperceptions of Hollywood’s fantasy as reality. How do you eat an elephant?–one bite at a time. How do we replace our bad image around the world? We engage in cross cultural relationships–one person or family at a time. We can also give Hollywood a message in the pocketbook to improve the content of their stories to build character with enduring values and virtues.
Arnold Toynbee said, “All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good people to do nothing.” As individuals we cannot do everything, but each can do something. If not you, who? If not now, when? We can mold the course of events that shape our image and influence our culture and others. The Bible, the worlds best seller but often the least read, tells us, “Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious-the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. One of the most treasured experiences of our family is to volunteer as a host family for foreign students studying at colleges and universities nearby. It is like the world come to our doorstep. It makes world history, geography, language, culture come alive. The exchange has great educational value and forges lasting friendships that endure for a lifetime. Our children were motivated to understand other cultures, travel and study which has enriched their lives. The true character of an ordinary family can do more for creating a true image of good will in contrast to the counter culture often projected by Hollywood.
American families, as ambassadors of good will, can inquire through their local service clubs, places of worship international relief and development organizations how to establish a cross cultural relationship match with an individual or family almost anywhere in the world.
Imagine the impact of each American doing one small thing each day to make a difference in their neighborhood, community, country and world! We can take back what has been lost. We can together create a whole new reality show of America the beautiful for the world to see. Imagine Hollywood on a new mission to restore the virtues of character and the triumph of good over evil. It has been done, it should be done and can be done. If done well it will sell and provide a much needed image adjustment for the USA.
A proven method of education is “don’t tell me–show me” This is the show we need to put on the road. Give up one hour of TV or a trip to the casino for one hour of relationship building a week and see what a world of difference you can make for yourself and others. Prices have been constantly rising, and it seems like everyone is struggling to make ends meet. Somehow our income is not going as far as it used to and our bills are getting higher by the minute. However, that does not mean that you have to be house poor and simply go home every night. You can definitely have a social life by simply creating some inexpensive entertainment options. The key is to be creative!
Game Night
A little healthy competition gets everyone’s blood pumping, so why not set up your own game night? Invite a few of your friends over by sending out cute invitations. You can put together a crossword puzzle invite or even a word search. From there you need to set up your evening. Pull together a variety of board and card games. For this evening you will want to have easy to eat finger foods and yummy drinks. For example maybe you want to put together some mixed nuts, veggies and dip, and cheese and crackers along with some delicious flavored sodas in glass bottles. When your guests arrive you can simply get down to the fun at hand!
Wine Tasting
If you are looking for a sophisticated evening with friends then you might want to look into hosting a wine tasting for your friends. A great way to do this is to ask all of your guests to bring their favorite bottle of wine to share. From there you can get started on the food. One of the best ways to handle the snacks is to do cheese and chocolate which both go with wine fantastically. Head to your local grocery and pick up a variety of different cheeses and crackers to display on different platters. Additionally, pick up several different types of chocolate that you can put out for your party. In preparations for your guests you will want to set out your food, and have a bunch of wine glasses out for your guests to begin tasting with.
Pot Luck
Food and friends is always a good combination so why not host a potluck. Potlucks are wonderful because it can save on costs, but more than that it gives everyone an opportunity to share some of their favorite recipes. Invite your friends to make their favorite dish, but also request that they write down the recipe for display by their dish. Then provide the rest of your guests with pens and recipe cards to write down and keep their favorite recipes of the evening. A great way to invite your friends to this is actually by creating an invitation from a recipe card with one of your favorite recipes on it that you are willing to share with your friends.
Entertaining does not have to be expensive. Instead, with a few great ideas you can set yourself up for an evening of fun interactions with your friends without spending and arm and a leg. Allow yourself to be creative and you will be in for a great time!

Trade Show Entertainment
Trade shows offer a different but very interesting venue for various entertainment artists. Because people move around and performances are very seldom arranged at specific times, a performer’s main job is usually to attract and keep customers by the stand.
However, a skillful performer can attract a big group at the same time and develop a good overall feeling about the company he’s working for. I often found that some people don’t come immediately to visit the stand after the performance, but interest is awakened and they come later the same day.
As a magician I have worked on many trade show events and found different ways to promote the client and their products. Magic is good because people are generally very interested in it and I have found that the company message is easy to deliver disguised in a magic trick. The magic performed can use the company name or product, thus linking the sales message with magic itself.
Different attraction methods has been used by companies; musicians, jugglers, loud sound effects and even theater but nothing works better than a seasoned performer who can gather big crowds in minutes. As in street magic, we need sound, color and movement to attract attention, it is a good idea to work on a slightly elevated stand from time to time, but once some onlookers are attracted, the interest is developed and more will come.
Once the customers are around the stand, the sales staff has a better chance to move in on them. This is why magic is good, because it can hold peoples interest for many minutes and those few minutes might be the difference between a sales person making a contact or not.
I have had special cards printed with the company’s logo and message printed on the other side. When doing a card trick I make a visual card change in the customers hand and give the changed card as a souvenir to keep. This is very strong, because first of all the customer has an object to keep that changed in his hands impossibly and he will show it to others and tell them the story. The others will hear where this happened; the company name and the magicians name get free promotion. If he tells this story to his mates at the trade show café, one simple card trick can attract many more free customers per day to the stand. This is the power of good magic!
A magician at a trade show stand can create a much more memorable image of the company than a standard, often boring stand could ever do. Many trade shows stands are uninspiring, except to those particularly interested in the product. People walk around and see the same type of stands over and over again, and we need something to really awaken their interest, get them to stop, wake up from their day dreaming state and visit this interesting stand. Using a magician as an attraction creates a different image and can easily make this company stand out from the others offering the same product or services. It also makes you memorable, and sometimes at trade shows this is all you seek.
The best way to do this, for me as a magician, is to use close up magic and impromptu stand up performances by the stand. I might start slowly with close up and get some people interested and then slowly turn it to a more public performance. For the stand up shows, I use a wireless microphone, some colorful items in the beginning that change fast and some custom build sound effects in between effects. Humor is also very important, and once a good crowd is gathered, the important message is simple to deliver. If done correctly and professionally customers will remember this company and they get many new potential clients.
