Reading For Entertainment

Let’s look at our home and money situation. Do we have a family? And do we still want to have some fun-filled entertainment in our lives? We’re tired of watching television every night, but we’re monitoring the family dollar, and to take the whole gang to the movies is a big chunk of change. So let’s go back to a common form of entertainment of the past: Reading.

As a little girl, home-computers were not around, but we did watch television. Our television viewing wasn’t extreme. Saturday morning cartoons as a child are a wonderful memory. But what I remember vividly was my mother reading to me every night. I would then read to her when I got a little older, and then finally — when my reading was proficient enough — I’d snuggle in my bed at night and climb under the covers and read novel after novel — something I still love to do today. This enabled me to travel to far-away places, my imagination being my plane ticket to anywhere I desired. With other forms of entertainment being so readily available nowadays, many people have lost this passion to read. Maybe our finances are our primary motivation for looking for cheaper forms of entertainment, but there are so many more benefits.

• We become proficient in one of the main skills required for functioning in today’s world.
• Improves vocabulary and conversational skills.
• Entertainment — rarely get bored.
• Children and teenagers have higher IQs when they love reading
• Promotes mental development because it involves concentrating whereas listening to the radio or watching the television only require limited involvement.
• Broadens our perspective. If we read certain kinds of books about different cultures and different countries, we grow to understand their histories and thus their lifestyles today. The same can be said for reading our own historical books.
• Books can affect our attitude towards life, and thus improve our life if we read the right kind of books.

I tell my children to read at least a half an hour a day, but that’s good advice for anyone. They’ve all found their own love for reading, but have definitely needed a prodding here and there. If we have young children, now is the time to start. Read to them when they’re babies, as part of the routine, and they’ll learn to enjoy it. When they start school, reading will have been such a positive experience for them — time with their parents — that it won’t be considered a laborious task! Rather it will be an imaginative ride or a fun lesson in knowledge.

So keep the television off tonight, go to the library or bookstore or browse amazon if you don’t want to go anywhere, and then find your book, hunker down and open up this whole new world.

It seems like the modern home theater system has about a hundred different components to keep track of. Back in the day, home theater consisted merely of one television (and probably a black and white one at that!). Today, the average system consists of numerous pieces including a television, receiver, DVD player, cable box, speakers… that’s only naming a few! With this explosion of components comes a need to keep everything organized. That’s where entertainment units come into play. If you want to keep your system organized with all of those ugly wires out of sight, you’ll need to purchase one of these useful pieces of furniture.

Now that you’ve decided that you must have an entertainment unit, you’ll need to figure out exactly which unit is right for you. Most of that depends on the extent of your system. If you have a full system with all of the electronics mentioned above (or more), you’ll need quite a large entertainment center. On the other hand, if your setup is limited, you may not even need to purchase an entire unit. Instead, you may be able to make due with something as simple as a table.

There are other functional requirements to think about before you can choose a table based solely on style. Is the entertainment unit designed to accommodate sophisticated electronics? Some pieces incorporate a power strip within the unit itself. This will give make setup much easier than drilling holes and awkwardly forcing power cords through.

When choosing an entertainment unit, you must also take into account the décor of the room into which you will place it. Are the other furnishings of the modern variety, or are they more traditional? Obviously, buying a contemporary entertainment unit for a room that is entirely traditional will result in a look that is completely out of place. Every piece in the room should compliment all of the others. Along the same lines, try to match the color of your entertainment unit to the other furniture, or at least choose a color that doesn’t badly clash.

Finally, it’s important to visualize exactly how your setup will fit into the entertainment unit of your choosing. Before you leave your house or apartment to start shopping, make a detailed list of all of the components that will go into the unit, as well as other media such as DVD’s and CD’s. If you really want to take your planning to the next level, write down the dimensions of each component. For most people, the most important thing is to know how large the television is. The other pieces can be manipulated, but if your TV doesn’t fit, you’ll be out of luck.

If you take into account some basic conditions when purchasing an entertainment unit, you shouldn’t have a problem. The most important thing to remember is that your unit is built to house your electronics; that means that your decision needs to be based on the components you already have, not the entertainment unit that is most aesthetically pleasing. Hopefully, you won’t have to make that distinction!

Entertaining Overnight House Guests – Made Easy

I have truly enjoyed entertaining overnight house guests and since we live in Florida near a beautiful beach, we have guests who look forward to the change in scene and for some to get away from frigid weather up north. It is fun and enjoyable simply because of pre-planning and organization.

Below are some tips that work very well for entertaining overnight guests:

*Planning – put together a plan for meals to be served including breakfast, lunch and dinner far in advance to allow sufficient time to shop for groceries and have the right food on hand.

*Food Preparation – prepare most foods ahead, freeze or refrigerate.

*Breakfast – this meal tends to be more difficult to prepare in advance. Have on hand cereals, yogurts, protein powder to make smoothies, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon/sausage, pancake mix, frozen waffles. Preparing omelets and pancakes makes breakfast special and my guests enjoy watching this activity. Also, I have on hand a few additions so that my guests can personalize their omelet.

*Lunch – sandwiches are the quickest and easiest to prepare. Have on hand a variety of deli meats, tomatoes, dressings. Package salad mixes work well along with a variety of bottled dressings. Leftovers from dinner the night before also works well including fried chicken, cold sliced roast beef served over salad greens topped with dressing.

*Dinners – meals that can be made ahead include casseroles, tomato sauce, either with meat or marinara style, fried breaded chicken breast. I do the breading early in the day and refrigerate till ready to fry. Fry an hour before serving, and place in a warm oven. This gives you additional time to set the table, prepare a salad and visit with guests. I also prepare breaded veal cutlets and fry in extra virgin olive oil or bake until brown. An easy meal is serving the cutlets with lemon slices, a vegetable and a salad. Also, the cutlets can be served cold the next day in a sandwich.

*Morning Coffee – if you have an auto-timer coffee maker, prepare coffee the night before and set to the time guest awake. Have cups, sweetener, and cream set out for guests to help themselves until breakfast is prepared.

*Preparing the House -place an alarm clock in the bedroom. Have adequate hangers in the closet and provide drawer space. Find a space to store luggage.

*Bathroom – should be equipped with fresh soap at the sink and in the shower along with shampoo and conditioner. Have an extra supply of towels stored in a convenient place for guests to reach. Since traveling by air these days makes packing some toiletries difficult, have on hand in the guest bathroom small bottles of lotion, toothpaste, toothbrush, small size package of aspirin/ibuprofen, Band-Aids, even a spare hairdryer can come in handy. I also like to include a small package of TUMS, as it’s easy to over indulge when on vacation and always have a few extra rolls of toilet tissue.

*When Children Come To Visit – keeping children entertained is easy. Just be sure to have things like books, puzzles, crayons, paper, scissors, and Silly Putty. Also have a small variety of toys and a large basket to store the toys, making cleanup easy. Kids can sometimes be picky eaters, but most children enjoy chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, bagels, waffles, canned soups and fresh fruit.

I have found planning in advance has made my time with guests relaxing and gives me more time to spend visiting with them.

Entertainment Agencies – A License to Print Money – Definitely Not

I was quite amazed when browsing the web the other day to find someone advertising an entertainment agency for sale and asking for bids on it, curious I decided to take a closer look. I also found some sites also selling entertainment agencies, this time with asking prices, and what the supposed turnover for those companies was.

I have been in the entertainment industry for over 31 years, and acting as CEO of an entertainment agency since the year 2000, and what I read astonished even myself. My aim in this article to deal primarily with the first site I mentioned although I will not reveal its name.

The person advertising the site made it appear that anyone can run a successful agency, and that you really don’t need any skill, and that you can use it to make lots of money. These are the main points of the sales pitch that I wish to comment on.

Firstly not everyone can run a successful entertainment agency, it is more than just finding a few acts to add to your books and then selling their services. To be successful requires building relationships with acts, clients and venues; it requires building trust and that can only happen with time. A successful agency needs a good variety of acts to offer, as each clients needs are different, and each event is bespoke, no two are the same. Experience is the key; knowledge of the industry a must, being able to offer advice that is competent to clients and acts is paramount. You cannot sell something about which you have little or no knowledge.

A good entertainment agent is a skilled individual, the same as an electrician or builder. The main skill is how to tell a good act or service from a bad one, how to get them to want you to represent them. An agent also needs to understand the best way to market a particular act, what events they are suitable for, which clients would be interested in them, you don’t try and market a rock band to the cabaret club on a cruise ship full of pensioners and you wouldn’t suggest a blue comedian to supply family entertainment at a holiday centre. Agents have to be skilled in separating the wheat from the chaff, they have to be good at promotion, and they have to be sales people. Trust me it is harder to sell a service than it is a product.

The third point was that it is easy money, which is a big no. Most people looking for entertainment will try many sources and often more than one agent, so you are competing with others in the industry, others with experience. Lets say that in a week a new agency gets 25 enquiries, which is an over estimate, but makes the figures easier (I am allowing an approximate 10% conversion rate from enquiry to sale). Perhaps 3 of those enquiries translate into bookings at lets say £200 per act per booking that makes a total of £600 the acts will earn, that is not the agencies money the agencies money comes via commission. Now lets say the agency charges a commission of the average 15% that equals a commission made of £90.00. Now subtract from that overheads, telephone, postage, printing, software, advertising and also time spent working on winning those 3 out of 25 enquiries, also take into account the cost spent on the enquiries that did not convert, you will probably find that after everything those 3 acts have made you a total of £50.00 after expenses. Now comes the next bit of bad news, you cannot claim any commission until after the act has done the job and been paid by the client, if one of those bookings is 6 months away then you have to wait. There is also the matter of taxation and in the UK national insurance contributions, which takes a little more from the profits.

An agent also needs to know the law in the country in which they operate, and to comply with it. But that could make god knows how many more articles in it’s own right. The other thing to bear in mind if you operate in the UK is that it is illegal to charge an act a fee for registering with you, I cannot comment on if this is the case in other countries.

To clarify what I have written, entertainment agencies are not a get rich quick scheme, the good ones are managed and run by dedicated individuals who put in long hours, people who have worked hard within the industry to build themselves up to where they are now, it did not happen overnight. There is no such thing as easy money we all work for what we get nothing comes for free. It is drive and determination and a unique skill set that separates the top agencies from the rest and to get the quality acts on your books means knowing your industry.

Another option is a system that you construct yourself which can be built in various styles and shapes to fit the spatial needs of your room.

There are also stands which you can place other things besides your entertainment equipment on. Depending on how many shelves there are, pictures, plants, and books, among other things, can be put around the entertainment system making it multi purposeful as well as practical and decorative.

Cost is an important aspect of buying entertainment furniture. Entertainment centers can range anywhere from under 50 dollars to thousands of dollars. It depends on what entertainment center you would like, from home constructed ones to large gorgeous wooden entertainment armoires. The costs vary depending on the entertainment system you have and how large, decorative, and practical you would like your entertainment center to be.
